If you could ask God about anything that directly influences where you are in life, what would it be?

This project is a challenge to the believer and unbeliever alike. Provoking everyone to see their need for communion with God. No one person has all the answers, but God sees and knows everything. “Portraits & Petitions” confronts us to have a posture of humility. To see ourselves both as we are physically and to reflect on who we are internally. Do we see ourselves through the lens of the world around us, or as God created us to be? Being an “image bearer” of God is not limited to the physical, but begins from the inside out.

Prayer is the way we connect, and speak with God. Jesus encourages us to be persistent in it. Not just to ask Him for what we want (like He’s some sort of genie), but to approach Him in humility and honesty, according to the Father’s will. When we pray, we are asking God for guidance and wisdom, ultimately so we can be transformed by the directive He gives. Because of our sin, we push God away from us (Isa. 59:2) and it hinders our prayers from being answered. The longer we are entertaining what is contrary to His plan for us, we remain at a distance from Him.

However, God freely offers mercy and forgiveness when we “confess our sins” (1 John 1:9). His compassion, should not be regarded lightly and this project is a response to the overwhelming grace He has shown me. God promised Israel in Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”, and it remains true for us today, Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”

Portraits & Petitions is a challenge to everyone, to reflect and respond to the invitation of confession Christ is offering.

“…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your petition be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.“

- Philippians 4:6-7
